AFF/PFAS
Protecting Communities Exposed to “Forever Chemicals”
For decades, Aqueous Film-Forming Foam (AFFF) has been used by firefighters, military personnel, and airport workers to combat fuel-based fires. However, mounting evidence has shown that AFFF contains toxic chemicals known as PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances) — often referred to as “forever chemicals” due to their resistance to breaking down in the environment or human body.

Studies have linked PFAS exposure to a wide range of serious health issues, including kidney cancer, testicular cancer, thyroid disease, liver damage, immune system dysfunction, and birth defects. Manufacturers of AFFF — including 3M, DuPont, and others — are now facing a growing number of lawsuits for knowingly selling toxic firefighting foam without warning users of its dangers.

What Are PFAS and Why Are They Dangerous?
PFAS are a group of man-made chemicals used for their water and grease-resistant properties. Once released into the environment, PFAS contaminate soil, drinking water, and even the human bloodstream — where they can remain for years and accumulate over time.
Exposure is most common in:
-
Firefighters and first responders
 -
Military personnel (especially on U.S. military bases)
 -
Airport and industrial workers
 -
Residents near military bases or contaminated water sources

Legal Claims and Allegations
AFFF lawsuits allege that:
-
Manufacturers failed to warn users about the risks
 -
Companies knew for decades about the toxicity of PFAS
 -
Victims developed serious health problems due to long-term exposure

Many of these lawsuits are now consolidated into Multidistrict Litigation (MDL No. 2873) in the U.S. District Court of South Carolina.

Health Conditions Linked to PFAS Exposure
-
Kidney cancer
 -
Testicular cancer
 -
Ulcerative colitis
 -
Thyroid disease
 -
Liver and kidney damage
 -
High cholesterol and hypertension
 -
Pregnancy complications and low birth weight
