Paraquat Lawsuits: An Overview

Over the past several years, thousands of lawsuits have been filed against the makers of Paraquat, a highly toxic herbicide linked to Parkinson’s disease. Plaintiffs allege that prolonged exposure to Paraquat — through spraying, mixing, or even living near treated areas — significantly increased their risk of developing the degenerative neurological disorder.

Manufactured by Syngenta and Chevron Phillips Chemical, Paraquat has been used widely across the U.S. in agriculture for decades. Despite its known toxicity, the companies allegedly failed to warn users of the long-term risks.

Latest Developments as of 2025

MDL Update: Bellwether Trials Underway

The Paraquat cases are currently consolidated into Multidistrict Litigation (MDL No. 3004) in the Southern District of Illinois. As of mid-2025, the MDL has grown to over 5,000 cases.

The first bellwether trial began in October 2023, and while a verdict has not yet resulted in a global settlement, it helped establish key arguments on both sides regarding causation and liability.

More bellwether trials are scheduled for late 2025 and early 2026, which are expected to influence potential future settlements and determine how juries respond to the core scientific evidence linking Paraquat to Parkinson’s disease.

No Mass Settlement Yet — But Talks Are Ongoing

While no global settlement has been announced, negotiations are active between plaintiff leadership and the defendants. Legal experts believe the outcome of the next few trials could accelerate settlement discussions — especially if verdicts favor plaintiffs.

Scientific Evidence Driving the Litigation

Key studies, including research from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and other peer-reviewed journals, have shown a statistically significant link between Paraquat exposure and an increased risk of developing Parkinson’s disease.

Internal corporate documents uncovered during litigation have also raised concerns that Syngenta and Chevron may have known of the neurological risks for decades but failed to act.
